MSNBC.com is reporting that “Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, announced Monday he will retire from the Senate by end of year.”
Good riddance! We all recall back in 2002 when Lott was on the hot seat for telling the crowd at a 100th birthday celebration for Thurmond, the South Carolina senator who in 1948 ran an overtly racist campaign for president on the State’s Rights Party ticket: “I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years either.”
You can get to steppin’ Trent. Peace Out!
